The HCA role
Healthcare assistants support nurses and the wider team with day-to-day patient care. That can include personal care, helping people move, supporting meals and drinks, taking simple observations where trained, and keeping clear records. Settings include hospitals, care homes, community services and clinics.
Topics covered
Communication, dignity and privacy, infection prevention, safeguarding adults, health and safety basics, person-centred values, handling information, and awareness of mental health, dementia, learning disability and autism. These map to the knowledge side of the Care Certificate standards many HCA employers use during induction.
Care Certificate and induction
Most new HCAs complete induction with their employer. Online knowledge training helps you arrive prepared. Your employer still arranges DBS checks where needed, local policies, practical skills and Care Certificate observation.
