What the role involves
Care workers support people with personal care, daily living, companionship and staying safe at home or in a care setting. You work under policies set by your employer and, in regulated services, within CQC expectations for safe staffing and training.
Typical employer requirements
A caring attitude and reliable communication. Right to work in the UK. Often an enhanced DBS check. Willingness to complete induction and the Care Certificate standards. Some roles ask for prior experience; many entry roles train you on the job. English and maths confidence helps with records and medication-related tasks where those apply.
Step by step path
- Decide which setting suits you (home care, residential, hospital support and so on).
- Apply for entry roles and prepare simple examples of caring experience (family care, volunteering or customer service can help).
- Complete interview and pre-employment checks.
- Start induction with your employer.
- Complete knowledge training for the 16 Care Certificate standards.
- Pass workplace observations and receive employer sign-off for the Care Certificate.
- Keep up with mandatory training and supervision.
Where online training fits
Online knowledge training is step 5 support, not a shortcut past DBS, induction or observation. Care School's £14.99 course is designed for that knowledge stage.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a qualification first?
Not always. Many employers hire for values and train you. Regulated diplomas are a later progression route for some staff.
Can I study before I get a job?
Yes, you can complete knowledge modules early. You still need a workplace and assessor for full Care Certificate sign-off.
